AIDSA certain Mr. Tom Hanks portrayed the character of an AIDS patient perfectly in the movie ‘Philadelphia’. The western society was already deep in pain as the Human Immuno virus had jumped pools and started disturbing our race, What Hanks showed was the utter helplessness, sense of shame and the stigma that is associated with the disease. Okay then! Quickly: Human Immuno Virus causes a disease called the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome in us, better known as AIDS. It completely kills our immune system with time and in its final stage it makes a living body as bad as a corpse. All that it can do is breathe. But even breathing comes through hard labor.

Symptoms

Initially it is difficult to diagnose AIDS. With time, the symptoms come to the fore. When people suffering from AIDS fall ill, they do not recover quickly. This is because the white blood cells are not just up to the task of fighting the foreign elements. This means even if an AIDS patient sneezes he is most likely to recover in a long time from such respiratory issue.

The wounds, once they set inside an AIDS patient do not heal quickly. It takes a lot of time to clot; even the process of drying out of wound does not come easy. AIDS patients become very weak with time. Soon they are sorry figures of their past. A person is likely to lose more than half his weight by the time the last phase arrives. He is also likely to lose all his appetite by this time. Appetite is not suppressed by this disease; it is completely killed with time. Patient of AIDS becomes lazy. They like to lie around a lot.

Social stigma

AIDS kills before it actually kills. Though it is still an acceptable disease in western society, in most parts of South East Asia and more so in the Middle East, it is a disease which is related to a lot of social stigma. Once the news is out, a person is simply cast away by the society. People start making judgments, assuming the person to be a shady character with no morality whatsoever. Such people lose respect of the society and get completely aloof. A person can still fight the disease but the psychological trauma of knowing that you have AIDS and also that the society stops to recognize you as its part is a double pain to live with. Most of the AIDS patients fail to survive the pain.

Cause

AIDS is caused due to three reasons in human beings. First one is sexual misdemeanor. There are a lot of contraceptives in the market today. Safe sex using these contraceptives can help with preventing AIDS. Sex is an impulse and often people get lost in the heat of the moment. Aids then is chiefly caused by unsafe sex. Vaginal region often has the AIDS virus and it gets transmitted with such unsafe coital practices.

Secondly, AIDS can be transmitted through blood transfusions or cuts and bruises in the body. Thirdly, it can be transmitted from parents to their children. This is the genetic transference. The second and third causes are fairly accidental and a human can’t be blamed for it.

Treatment

AIDS can be treated today with relative ease. A patient can live with the disease. It will inhibit his responses but at the same time it is possible to live with it through proper remedial measures. These include drugs and a change in living style.

And yes, AIDS is not contagious. It does not get transferred through touch.
