AgingAging is the culmination of changes in human or other organism. Human beings age in respect of physical as well as psychological aspects. With age, our knowledge might expand but what slows with age is ‘reaction time’. Our birthday every year is symbolic of the age that piles up each year. Besides this, there are different kinds of aging in society – population aging, proximal aging, social aging and many others.

Scientific process of aging
The process of aging in biology is called as senescence. Senescence in organism is determined by its inability to respond to tension, higher risk of diseases and increased homeostatic imbalance. These are some changes that are permanent and lead to death. Aging in humans and animals is due to the decrease in telomeres, these shorten with each cell cycle till the cells die.

Aging affects cognitive capabilities
Various cognitive procedures suffer a decline with age, this has been noticed worldwide. Aging brings a decline in the memory, but not in case of semantic memory – like remembering various definitions of words and terms. What has been spotted is the slow decline in intelligence with aging, at a varied degree. Like, it might be sound all through the life span only diminishing at the end of one’s life, before death.

What do we understand by the term successful aging?
Successful aging may include certain aspects while aging, like: good mental health, physically sound health with no immobilization after the age of 75, satisfaction in family, society, hobbies, religion and community life. These people are found to be very actively engaged with life, which removes such disabilities, attributed to old age.

What is the basis of aging?
Certain biological theories might throw some light on the matter. Reproductive cell theory, telomere theory, somatic mutation theories are just some of the theories, which talks about aging. It is often believed in these theories that when genetic integrity of the cells damage, it leads to aging. Body tissues are attacked by auto antibodies and if this increases then it results in aging of our body.

What are the changes brought about by aging?
Aging brings about a lot of changes in the posture a person sits as the spinal vertebrae can be packed together lending a curved look to it. Even joints may become stiff and density in bones can be lost. With age, muscles lose its quality and look thinner. Tissues become thinner which makes them prone to injury, eventually they become rigid and affect internal organs. Apart from these serious signs of aging, it is evident on the skin that loses elasticity leading to wrinkles.

How does aging affect hormones?
Hormones are natural chemicals that are absorbed into the bloodstream for the use of other organs in our body. Aging bring a change in the way these hormone are utilized in the body, often making the process slow, decreasing the hormone levels.

• Happiness is the key to better living and successful lives. So be happy and be in the company of cheerful friends that will uplift your mood.
• Never let your mind be idle but keep on brushing it by learning new skills, crafts or even by gardening.
• Do not let your inner self die when you still have a lot to do, so what if your age is increasing!
• Eat proper diet that will keep you fit and do not forget to exercise that is suitable for you. Always consult your physician who can guide achieve good health and counter aging.
• Be active and cherish small things in life. Travel or simply take a walk everyday to the nearby park or mall to freshen up your mood and be active physically.
