Acne is typified by the appearance of pimples largely on the face, back and even chest. When it turns out to be severe, it becomes inflammatory. This type of acne, which is a skin disease, is known as Acne Vulgaris. Acne is prevalent in youth and can decrease with age or even completely vanish with the progress of time. The cause of acne is clogged pores with dead skin cells, oils and even bacteria. Acne can even be spotted in some newborn babies.
Different types of acne
Acne can vary from mild to damaging. Common types of acne spots that can be seen in mild to moderate Acne Vulgaris are:
• Whiteheads: It appears when sebum, dead cells and bacteria get trapped inside a pore making it look white.
• Blackheads: These pop up when a pore is partly blocked and some oil, bacteria and dead cells escape into the outer layer. Skin contains melanin and when it reacts with oxygen present in the air, it darkens.
• Pustules: It is an inflamed form of a whitehead that appears in the form of a red circle containing yellow or white center.
• Papules: These are dangerous little bulges that are inflamed in nature. This is without a head and red in color. You must never squeeze a papule.
In severe type of Acne Vulgaris, we come across the following types:
• Nodules: These are acne that looks bigger in form and also quite painful. Nodules can continue to last for many months and they look hard on the skin.
• Cysts: Acne cysts are filled with pus, which has a thickness of 5mm or even more. These are painful and leave scars behind as well.
Some other severe forms of acne are Acne Rosacea, Acne Conglobata, Acne Fulminans, Gram-Negative Folliculitis and Pioderma Faciale. The most common features in all these acne are cysts, nodules, redness, sores and scars.
Root cause of acne
Why is acne prevalent in some people and absent in some is still not known. Factors like genetic history, hormonal activity, inflammation, stress, hyperactive sebaceous glands, use of anabolic steroids and certain type of medication or exposure to chemical compounds have been stated. Certain food intakes, carbohydrates can also result in acne as studies have proved. Dirt is another cause of acne, which cannot be avoided.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is done on the basis of diet, skin care regimen, medical history and even use of medication. It is observed whether the blemishes have inflammation, they are superficial or deep and skin discoloration has taken place or not. There is a variety of acne so even blood tests and stool tests need to be performed. It can clarified whether there is any bacterial growth or not.
